What is Momme Silk?
Momme(mm) is used to measure density of silk fabrics and provide understanding of the quality in a silk fabric. If a piece of silk with the dimensions 100 ft, (30.5 metres), by 45 inches(1.1 metres), weighed 22 pounds (9.7 kg), then the density of the silk fabric would be 22 momme.
What is the difference in Quality of Momme Silk?
The average momme weight for silk ranges from 12 momme - 22 momme. 22 momme being of a higher quality, and a longer expected lifespan. The higher the momme weight, the higher the amount of silk used, and the more expensive and greater quality the silk is. The higher the weight in mommes, the more durable the weave, and the more suitable it is for heavy-duty use. And, the heavier the silk, the more opaque it becomes.
Why Not Use Thread Count?
The reason thread count doesn't work with silk products is because a single thread of silk is approximately 1/10 the width of a human hair strand so it may seem as though there are a lot more threads than there really are. Therefore the amount of silk in a piece of fabric cannot be compared to the amount of thread in another piece of fabric.
